The arrest took place Tuesday morning 24th March 2015 at Fort Portal Police Station where Gerald and his colleague Simon Amanyire had gone to check on the detained Prince David George Kijanangoma of Tooro Kingdom who is advocating against illegal land evictions, use of Uganda People’s defence forces in a high handed manner to evict tenants on Kingdom land and overcharging tenants contrary to the law.

Both Prince David Kijanangoma and Gerald Kankya are still in police cells in Fort Portal.

We condemn these arrests in the strongest terms and call for the immediate and unconditional release of these human rights defenders.
